The name " Black Sea" seems to have come from many different theories. One theory says that the name may have come from an ancient assignment of colors to the direction of the compass. The Black sea refers to the "north" as the red to the "south". Another possibility may refer to the color of the Black Sea's deep waters (water looks dark) during the winter and its heavy fogs. This dark color is due to the rich concentration of microalgae and small amount of saline. Also, the Bulgarian understanding of the Black Sea is that it used to be some what stormy, obtaining the name Black. In naval science, the name Black was acquired from it is hydrogen sulfide layers that begin about 200 meters below the surface, and that ends all life from that point downward.
