The more strategically important bottleneck in the West, at the time, was Chattanooga. Grant took over command at Chattanooga, and once he won the Battle of Lookout Mountain, it opened up the way for Sherman to march on Atlanta, a much more strategically important move than merely raiding the immediate vicinity around Vicksburg.
To get to the Mississippi River from Meridian, MS, you simply take Interstate 20 through Jackson, MS to Vicksburg, MS. Once entering Vicksburg, continuing on Interstate 20 crosses the Mississippi River. Another route is to use Interstate 20 to Jackson, MS. continue to the Natchez Trace and continue to Natchez, MS. It "dead" ends at the Mississippi River.
The Mississippi River does not flow through Alabama. It is a border between Alabama and the states of Tennessee and Mississippi.

Sounds like the Grierson raid through the state of Mississippi in Spring 1863. It distracted the Confederate commander at Vicksburg, and enabled Grant to cross the Mississippi.
