As you are probably aware, the dessert is very dry, so any thing living there would find water hard to come by, so when rain does fall, a cactus will gather it giving them self a water containment while doing so. The same goes for camels. Camels store water in the humps so they don't grow thirsty throughout the day.

What is the thorns on the cactus for?

The cactus is one of the few plants found in the desert, and in order to survive it needs a massive amount of water. Since it does not rain all year round in a desert, cacti store water when it does rain. So the needles on the cactus protect their water-rich flesh from other things in the desert.

What would not help a saguaro survive in the desert?

Too much water or temperatures below freezing can damage or kill a saguaro cactus.

What is a prickly plant that grows in the desert?

A prickly plant that grows in the desert is a cactus. Cacti have adapted to survive the harsh desert conditions by storing water in their fleshy stems and having prickly spines to reduce water loss through transpiration. These features help cacti thrive in arid environments with limited water availability.

Why do desert plants have long and spiny leaves?

How can thick waxy skin help cactus survive?

A cactus' waxy skin helps it retain moisture in desert climates.

How does sunlight help a desert cactus?

Sunlight helps a desert cactus to grow. It's needed for photosynthesis. The sun brings its light to the photosynthetic interaction. The cactus plant brings its water, dissolved nutrients, and chlorophyll. The photosynthetic interaction between the sun and the cactus produces energizing starches and sugars. The energizing photosynthetic products are needed to fuel all of the cactus' life sustaining activities, such as growth, fruiting, and flowering.

How do flowers help cactus plants survive in the desert?

Flowers help cactus plants survive in the desert by attracting pollinators. Because of pollination, the cactus plants may have fruits full of seeds. For example, the giant saguaro cactus [Carnegiea gigantea] depends upon bats for pollination of its huge, light colored bat blossoms.

What are the similarities between an oasis and a desert?

The cactus plant absorbs plenty of water when it rains and stores in its stem. The plant survives on this water for rest of the ear

How do plants survive with barely any rainfall in the desert?

Plants are adapted to growing in cooler or wetter areas, preserving their own water, and having slower growth. They can grow on cooler areas where water is less likely to evaporate or takes longer to evaporate. Like a cactus, whenever it rains the cactus absorbs the water, then it preserves it's water, and since it has a slower growth it doesn't require as much water. The spines on a cactus may also help it collect moisture or fog on the air and also help prevent some moisture from escaping the surface of the cactus. Palm trees in the Sahara desert may grow on water sources or in shaded areas. Some plants in a desert grow widely spaced from each other so they have room to absorb enough water that surrounds them. Some plants in the Atacama Desert (the second driest place th the world) would get their water from condensed moist air or fog coming from the Pacific coast during the mornings instead of relying on rainfall. Whenever there's a water source in a desert you would see plants that are greener, taller, and more denser. There may even be a more of a variety of species. Camels, Coyotes, and thorndevils are animals that are adapted to the desert. Most desert animals could be nocturnal to escape the hot days from sleep.

How do the spines on a cactus help it survive?

Spines: Spines help the cactus in several ways. The most obvious use of the spines is for protection against foragers. The cactus basically states "How much pain are you willing to indure to get a drink in this desert?"; Surprisingly, some animals do partake. In some cactus varieties the spines participate in water collection. Water from dew condenses on spines and, in some cactus species, downward-pointing spines help to direct rainwater to the roots of the plant. Spines help to reflect light away from the cactus stem theoretically lowering the stem temperature. Some spines also trap in a layer of air next to the cactus stem preventing loss of water via evaporative cooling.

What kind of plants are in the Mojave Desert?

1. Roots are shallow and spread over a large area to collect as much water as possible. 2. Plants can store nutrients and water needed. 3. Have thorns instead of leaves to minimize water loss and keep animals away.
