Because the different organisms need to compete for different resources. For example, if all the trees were at the same level, then no light would be able to get to the forest floor. If there are 4 layers, however, then the light can filter through the trees. This allows different organisms to have the right amount of each resource rather than them having to adapt to the different levels of sunlight, rainfall etc.
