On the 24th of February 2010. Dawn Bracheau was killed by Shamu why preforming a show.
the are two compeltey different orcas, Shamu is a bunch of captive orcas in a seaworld park, in which all the orcas have the same show name Shamu. Free Willy is a fictional whale played by Kekio
There was only one shamu. He died in the year of '71. Every SeaWorld claims to have a "Shamu" but that is just like a show name for their whales. Hope that answers your question!!
Her name is Shamu and she just had a baby. Update: Actually, the question is using the wrong term - it is not a whale, but a killer whale - which is actually a porpoise and not a whale at all! Now she has four babies!
Shamu was the first orca displayed in Seaworld, where she later became famous for her shows in which she showed her impressive behaviors. Shamu's name meant 'friend of Namu'. Namu's, Shamu's male counterpart, name became a show name, but later, the name 'Shamu' became more popular. So, today, Shamu is just a stage name for both male AND female orcas. Originally, though, Shamu was a female.
Shamu was actually the name given to the second female killer whale ever captured. As you probably already know, along with Namu & Ramu, it is one of the stage names used for all of the killer whales used in the shows at the various SeaWorld parks.
The original Shamu died in SeaWorld Flordia after 6 years in captivity after being taken violently from his pod with his mother (who died succumbing to the wounds of the harpoon used to catch her) at a young age. I don't think anyone really knows what he died of but a lot of orcas do not do well once they have been taken from the wild, they are under a lot of stress as the environment is drastically different, they are potentially exposed to chemicals in the water and become more susceptible to infections and they need to adjust to a different diet. In a lot of cases, cause of death is still unknown or put down as 'stress' or 'stress related'. Apart from 'unknown' the most common cause of death in captivity is bacterial pneumonia and it is not unlikely that this is what the original Shamu died of as well. Causes of death in some of SeaWorld's other Shamus in the last 10 years: 2008: Halyn (2.5): unknown/ not publicized 2007: Taku (14): unknown/ not publicized, probably infection as he was put on antibiotics prior to his death. 2005: Splash (15.5): complications with a tooth infection 2001: Bjossa (21): chronic lung infection 2001: Haida 2 (19) :brain abcess 1999: Katerina (10.5): infection of some sort
Shamus real name is shamu, However the whales that use the show name in Orlando are Katina and Kayla and in California its,Kasatka, corky, and orkid, in Texas its Unna and Takara
Sometimes, yes, if you are chosen to participate in a demonstration during a show.
Shamu is just the stage name. The original Shamu died I think in the 80's it was. Tilikum is the one who killed the trainer. But his stage name is Shamu. No - Shamu (She - Name) was captured to be a companion for Namu. She didn't get along with him and was purchased by Seaworld San Diego for $75,000. The park had just opened a year before so Shamu was immediately trained to participate in the show. In August 1971, she died from Septicemia and Pyometra at the very young age of 9. She was so popular at SeaWorld, her name carries on as the trade mark name for orcas at Sea World. In other words, they have been lying for years as to the real names of the orcas there. Even the males are called "Shamu". Now that people are starting to realize they are indeed individuals, they can't run from the lie they've told to public for decades. Tilikum, meanwhile, after the attack and unfortunate death of Dawn Brancheau, has been kept in utter isolation ever since February 24th, 2010. He was also captured from the wild. To read more about him, go to Seeing is Believing, Tilikum's lonely life after Dawn, on The Orca Project. Shamu killed the trainer and got let into the ocean for killing loads of other trainers too

Sea World, at Surfers Paradise on Queensland's Gold Coast, opened on 30 October 1971. It actually began as Surfers Paradise Ski Gardens at Carrara, in 1958.It was later renamed and relocated to Sea World Drive in 1971.
