Egypt was a very dry land. At the time, I believe you're referring to, life wasn't as sophisticated as we know it now. People needed food and water. There's no way you can grow any type of food in the middle of a desert. They used the river banks, these river banks were fertile thanks to the rise and decrease of water flow. The floods cause the banks to remain fertile for a certain amount of time. Besides that, transport was also a very big factor. Having a way to import and export goods to other locations and to actually do trades with other people lead to the whole success of Egypt.
