The bridge made it much easier to travel north and south along the Pacific coast. If you were going, for example from San Jose to Mill Valley, up till 1937 you had the choice of going by ground all the way around the San Francisco Bay to the east, or to go by ground to San Francisco, then by ferry boat to somewhere like Sausalito, then continue by ground the rest of the way.
