I think that the problems with farming on a flood plain, is that as flood plains tend to be situated in a valley, so when it rains, there is bound to be a flood were you have been farming.
a canyon, gorge or vale
The flood plain of a valley is good for farming because it is a flat and fertile area that is regularly inundated by water during floods. The floodwaters deposit nutrient-rich sediments that enrich the soil, making it highly productive for agriculture. The constant water supply also helps in irrigation, resulting in higher crop yields.

No, the area drained by a river is a river basin or drainage basin. The flood plain is in the lower valley reaches, where heavy rain can cause the river to flood, often bursting over flood defences, and for the water to flood over a large area.
