The curvature of the earth is so slight as to go unnoticed over small distances. The water in a lake will appear to be flat because our eyes cannot perceive the very slight apparent rise in the middle which the curvature of the earth imparts to the water in very big lakes and oceans. At the other end of the scale we have the curvature of water in a very, very confined space, such as the neck of a narrow bottle. This curvature - called a miniscus - is due to capiliary attraction and results from the relationship between the thickness of a liquid and the distance between the sides of the vessel containing it. This causes the liquid to bulge upwards, or sometimes downwards, in the vessel containing it. The miniscus effect disappears if the liquid is thin and the sides are far apart.

The type of low, flat land left behind after a large body of water like a lake has disappeared is called a "dry lake bed" or "playa." This area is characterized by a flat, barren surface that may crack and split when dry, and is often covered in salt deposits due to the evaporation of the water.
Upper Klamath Lake (Klamath Falls, OR) covers 133 square miles, making it the largest fresh body of water west of the Mississippi.
