In his explorations of the Great Lakes, LaSalle used the unfrozen lakes and rivers as the most efficient mode of transportation. The Native Americans were already using portage trails to move between waterways that were not directly connected.
One such portage took Lasalle's 1680 expedition from the St. Joseph River on Lake Michigan to the Kankakee River near South Bend, Indiana. From there, they could travel to the Illinois River and thence to the Mississippi River, which they did in 1682, claiming the Mississippi valley for France.
La Salle was willing to carry his canoe over snow and frozen streams because he was determined to explore and expand French territories in North America. His commitment to his expedition and the pursuit of trade routes motivated him to endure the harsh conditions. This perseverance reflected his adventurous spirit and the importance of his mission to establish a stronger French presence in the region.
