The Eiffel Tower was built by Gustave Eiffel in 1889 for the Exposition Universelle; the Eiffel Tower is 300 m/984 ft tall. At the time it was built, it was the world's tallest free-standing structure.

It was built as the entrance to the Paris world's fair.
The Eiffel Tower had in the beginning no other purpose than to be the centerpiece of the 1889 World Fair in Paris. It was meant to demonstrate the progress of French science and engineering during the 19th century.

As to its practical use: first of all it is a big money earner because of its millions of visitors and because of the exploitation of two restaurants in the tower. Secondly, radio antennas have been mounted since almost the beginning, and today it carries transmission equipment for radio and television.
