Why was the Eiffel tower saved form being torn down in 1909?

Originally, the Tower was planned to stand for 20 years (that is, until 1909), after which it would be removed. However, it proved valuable as a radio tower, and was permitted to remain. Later in World War I, it was used for radio jamming equipment against German communications.

The engineer Gustave Eiffel had a twenty-year exploitation contract with the government. Troughout those years, most of the opposition to the tower faded away as people got used to it, and Eiffel managed to prove that the tower had other uses than being simply a landmark. Most notably, the radio experiments which were realised from the tower convinced the French government that the tower could become an useful asset in transmissions for the military, and the tower was allowed to stand.
