The Mississippi river was important to farmers because it provided a water source for their plants and animals. It was good that they were open to water because it helped their crops grow. Also if it is near the water, there will be many nutrients in the soil.
The Louisiana Purchase.
Western farmers and merchants were furious because they used the Mississippi River to send goods to eastern and foreign markets. Congress tried to work out an agreement with Spain, but the plan did not receive a majority vote in Congress.
Mississippi River
The Mississippi River opened boat and barge service that allowed farmers to sell there crops for cash. These crops were then transported down river to Gulf Coast seaports and shipped to Northern and Overseas Markets. This cash in turn, allowed he farmers to purchase goods and equipment that had been shipped up the river. Additionally, the river offered a source of fresh water for livestock and crops.
They permitted the westerners to transport their produce down the Mississippi River for sale.
