Ellis Island was a tiny island used to process immigrants to the USA for several years. Ellis Island was not "homeland" to anyone. Many immigrants came to the USA looking for jobs, a change / break from their old lives in their homeland, to join up with their relatives already in the USA, or to marry someone in the USA in arranged marriage. Probably more reasons as well...

Ellis Island is an island in the harbor of New York City. For about 60 years, from 1892 to 1954, people immigrating from other countries to the United States would arrive by ship at Ellis Island. http://www.ellisisland.org/genealogy/ellis_island_history.asp

There were hundreds of different ships that travelled from Italy to Ellis Island. You would have to search the records to identify a specific ship.

Immigrants reacted to Ellis Island with a range of emotions. Anxiety, sadness, excitement, and depression was common. Many passed through the entry process quickly, while others were detained. From the moment the process began, men were separated from the women and children, neither knowing when they would see the other again.
Since Ellis Island was a small community the people who worked there were everything from cleaning staff to doctors/nurses. People who worked for the federal government as secretaries and immigration officers would also work there. The new arrivals had to be processed so anyone that was involved in that would be found at Ellis Island.
Hope fully a passport.
Families already in America often received advance notice from their loved ones who were immigrating, typically through letters or telegrams. These communications would inform them of the expected arrival and the need to meet at Ellis Island, which was the primary processing station for immigrants. Additionally, word-of-mouth and community networks within immigrant groups helped spread information about the arrival process. As a result, many families were prepared to greet their relatives upon arrival.
