He didn't. His very first car was the Quadricycle. He then built several models starting with the Model A, B, etc and finally the Model T in 1908. He then again called another model the Model A in 1928. He used letter designations for his cars until much later on.
It is called the model t because, after all the names they finally came up with the model t.But that name was short lived.

Ford used letters as model names instead of words in the beginning. That car was called the Model T and that was it's name. Ford started using names as models later on in the 1930s.
