There are a number of aircraft that are designed without tail assemblies as we know them. As for aircraft designed with a tail assembly that may lose it in flight, that's problematic for the flight crew, but there have been instances of portions of tail assemblies being lost due to structural failure or accident that have managed to successfully land.

Check out the link below for more information and pictures.

An aircraft is designed to fly with the tail. That's where the horizontal and vertical stability/movement comes from. The only aircraft I know of that can fly without the vertical tail is the B52. As far as commercial airliners go you need all the controlling surfaces. You can look past crash history to find plenty of examples where aircraft have lost control and crashed. Alaska, Jet Blue, etc.

I'm an airline pilot and trust me when I say that if we lose the tail it's over. However rest assured an airplane is by far the most over engineered equipment out there. With 10 years in them I'm still amazed at how well they are built.

How does a propeller airplane fly?

The propellers act as a thrusting force which drives the airplane forward. In addition to the wings and vertical and horizontal tail wings, this helps an airplane to become airborne and fly.

No, the air is what allows for lift. The only way an airplane can "fly" without air is if the downward force of gravity didn't exist.

What do the wings of an airplane and the rotors of a helicopter have in common?

READ THIS - GOOD INFORMATION The wings of an airplane and the rotors of a helicopter both help the object fly. Without those the object could not fly because the wings of an airplane have wind going past it which keeps the airplane in the air. The rotors of a helicopter spin in the wind and help the helicopter fly.
