You only need 4 matchsticks of equal size to make a square.
You need 8 toothpicks to spell the word HAT by using one toothpick for each letter and five toothpicks to form the 'A' by overlapping two toothpicks for each leg.
The straightforward answer would appear to be eight, using separate toothpicks to form each letter.(Use 3 in the F, 3 in the A, and 2 in the T.)However, if you can use the same toothpicks for all three letters at the same time, you only need three. (see related link)Using 3 ToothpicksBy overlapping the three toothpicks at the proper angles, you can simultaneously form an F, an A, and a T. Place the toothpicks atop each other to form a small triangle in the middle. You will see the letters F, A, and T within the angles formed. The horizontals of the F are, however, oddly splayed and not parallel.(see related link)

Maine is the state that made the most wooden toothpicks
You arrange 12 toothpicks into a large square, subdivided into four squares : 2 toothpicks on each side and four more, one each from the middle of the sides to the center of the large square. Now you have four (small) squares. Take away 2 adjacent toothpicks from the ones in the center, and you have 2 squares : one remaining small one and the large one that has the small one inside it. Buy pieces of styrofoam. Then, you stick the base in styrofoam. Next, you measure the length of the first piece and the length of the shape of the toothpicks. You may put some vertical on the horizontal toothpicks. Cut off the top of the toothpicks, and put glue on them. If you just poke the next piece of the styrofoam on, you wouldn't be using the glue. Make sure the length of the styrofoam is slightly bigger than the shape of the toothpicks. Glue the styrofoam on. Lastly, do it over and over again until reached height desired. You will need • pieces of styrofoam • Over 100 pieces of toothpicks • Elmer's Glue-All glue
