Strength checks work like any other stat check.
Roll your dice and add your modifier to the number. If it's the same or higher then the check you succeed, if lower you fail.
What dice you use depends on what version you use, what you agreed beforehand, or if you're playing a d20 game.
If you're still confused, talk to the player with the most experience as your Game/Dungeon Master, or consult the rule books.
