Customizing a Breyer (or any model horse for that matter) is extremely hard. It requires pastel or acrylic paint, a paintbrush, a model to customize (you will want it primed in white or a chestnut-like color), and possibly an airbrush.

Once you've gotten the mold primed, or all paint removed (you can prime the mold, etch it all off; which is a painstaking process, or use sandpaper, which is even harder), you begin painting.

Many artists use a guide (picture) of what they want their model to look like when it is finished. They paint on the main color, then patterns. Some artists prefer to etch on the blaze, star, snip, etc. Socks and stockings are normally painted on in white paint.

Customizing doesn't always mean to paint and change the color of the model horse...!!...You can also change the model's original mane and tail, and either make a new one by using epoxy...or even add mohair that makes the model look like it has a real hair mane and tail...This is all still classed as Customizing.

Also you can do a little or a drastic change to the model's body by altering the way the model horse looks,..Like carving notches out of the plastic say in the neck and around the head and heating the plastic to bend easily into another position..Then fill in the gaps with epoxy, and once it's sanded and smoothed, you can prime the model..and then paint it however you want your model to look!!!......This is ALL Customizing, as well as just painting!!!.

You have to take baby steps, like with anything when you are first learning...but the more practice you do....you get better and better at it!!.

But, before you carve away at your model, study and research the horse anatomy, so that you will know how the limbs and muscle structure works!!!

If you want to get really good at customizing, then the more you study about horses, the better of an Artist you will become!!!
