This is my secret. Soak them in brake fluid for a day or two & it will come off with no damage at all to the plastic. A modeler showed me this many eons ago & is the only thing that really works well. It does no damage to the plastic as long as you only soak long enough to get paint off. if it's old it may take a day or 2 and then you just scrub off with a toothbrush and Dawn soap, let dry and viola! I know it sounds strange, but try it with some scrap and you will see.

What kind of paint is typically used for painting scale models of cars?

Testors Acrylic Paint is what most hobby shops sell for painting scale models. It can be difficult to find, especially if you don't have a hobby shop in your area, so you would probably be better off buying it on-line. I usually spray paint my models, because using a brush leaves brush lines; spray paint mimics a factory paint job and gives a more realistic look to the finished model. I usually use a paint formulated for plastic surfaces. Automotive paint is for metal, but I have used on some plastic models and it worked fine.

What are some tips for properly painting plastic car models?

When painting a car model, you must be careful to tape off any areas with masking tape that you do not want to get any paint on, such as metal fenders or tires. It is easiest to paint pieces of a model before you complete construction, but with some models coming already built this can be impossible. Also be careful not to apply too much excess paint to the brush, as unwanted drips may occur.
