Look at left and right sides/ends of the apple. You'll see a small circle on each end. That's a post that goes through the apple. Each end of that post has a 'lip', similar to the 'head of a pin', keeping the pieces from sliding off. There's a split in each end of that post, enabling you to squeeze it slightly. Squeezing it will make the end a tiny bit smaller, just enough for the first piece to come off. Or you can use a Leatherman tool and just PRY/POP the end piece off, like my son did!
