A red-tailed hawk flies using powerful, broad wings that allow for soaring and gliding. It often utilizes thermal updrafts to gain altitude with minimal energy expenditure, enabling it to cover large distances while searching for prey. During flight, its wings are primarily held in a slight V shape, which aids in stability and maneuverability. The hawk can also perform agile turns and dives when necessary to catch its prey.
Many hawks are called chicken hawks in the United States. They include, Cooper's hawk, goshawk, redtailed hawk and red shouldered hawk. The name really shouldn't apply, as these hawks rarely molest poultry.
