Each letter in Scrabble is given a point value based on how frequently these letters are used in common-day words in conversation, news, etc. The letter E is used very often (after all, look at how many Es there are in this answer), so it is less "valuable" and hence scored as 1 point. Letters like Q, however, are the opposite and are not used on a regular basis (again, note the amount of Qs here). Therefore, Q is considered more "valuable" and is scored as 10 points.
