A Naked Single is a case where a cell has only 1 possible value.

The name comes from analogy with Naked Pairs, Triples etc. A Naked Pair is when two cells A and B of some group - a row, column, or box - have the same two possible values. Whichever way those 2 values are assigned to cells A and B, they are not available to fill any of the other cells, so they can be removed as possibilities from the rest of the group. The "naked" indicates there are no other possibilities but the pair. Naked Triples, Quads, etc. work similarly. By extension downward, a single cell with a single possibility is a naked single.
