The "K" in "K-Mart" comes from the company's founder, Sebastian Spering Kresge, who opened his first store in 1899. The stores were called "Kresge" until 1962 when they adopted the "K-Mart" name.
Actually the first K-Mart opened in 1962, but most of the stores still carried the name S. S. Kresge Co. and were layed out like the traditional department stores, of their time, until the company was renamed to K-Mart Corporation in 1977.
