Sometimes interpreted by writers as analogous to fairies ( this was done in the Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta- Iolanthe)- The Muses were essentially demi-goddesses each with her own specialty. The word Museum is derived from them. Clio ( not connected to Cleopatra) was the Muse of History, Calliope was that of lyric poetry ( by extension, music) and so on. There were a good many muses- Thalia- comedy, Terpsichore- the dance and so on. All were female and were said to reside on or near Mt. Olympus. By the way the sacred Greek mount is on the island of Lesbos!
