Of course, they are for jumping, but grasshoppers seldom jump except when they want to take off and fly, or escape an enemy. If you have tried to catch grasshoppers by hand, you will know that they can jump well enough and some kinds can fly well enough, to be hard to catch. They also use their jumping legs for kicking if you catch them. If you look at the hind legs, you will find that they usually have a ridge of thorny spikes down the hind legs. Some large grasshoppers often have such spiny hind legs that they can kick you painfully if you catch one. A mouse often would like to catch and eat grasshoppers, but it it has been kicked on the nose by the first one it met, it would usually screw up its eyes and jump back as soon as it smells one. In South Africa where I live, we have a species of large garden grasshopper with the scientific name: Acanthacris ruficornis. acanth- comes from the Greek for "thorn" and -acris for grasshopper. When you grab one of those the wrong way the spiky hind legs can kick your fingers painfully! (ruficornis means red-horned, but never mind that!) Another thing that some grasshoppers including Acanthacris, will use their hind legs for, is that if you grab one by the hind leg and it cannot get away, it will break off its hind leg, using special muscles round a weak spot in the leg. It also has special muscles that prevent it from bleeding where the leg comes off. So: the main uses are jumping, kicking, and getting away from things that grab them. There are some unusual examples of other uses, but they are not what most people want to know when they ask such a question.
