A vineyard is where grapes are grown.
It's a biblical name. It literally means "my vineyard" in Hebrew.
Martha's Vineyard got its name from Bartholomew Gosnold, an English explorer who arrived in 1602. He named the island "Martha's Vineyard" in honor of his daughter, Martha, and because of the wild grapes he found growing there, referring to the area as a "vineyard." The name has since stuck, and the island is now known for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant communities.
The captain who spotted the island saw many grape plants, hence Vineyard, and his daughters name was Martha.
