When you roll the dice you move up as many places as you rolled. If you land on the snake's head you go down the snake. If you land at the bottom of the ladder then you go up the ladder. If you are on 98 lets say and you roll a 3 you go to 100 which is 2 steps and then you go back 1 which makes 3 steps. It is that easy.

"Snakes and Ladders" is historically significant because it's been a childhood classic for a very long time; in fact some historians believe it was played as early as the 2nd century BC.

"Snakes and Ladders" is an ancient Indian game called "Moksha Patam," that highlighted the idea of Karma or "Paramapada Sopanam," meaning "the ladder to salvation." In the game, the ladders that move your token up the board represent virtues, whereas the snakes that will move you back down the board represent vices. The game was intended to teach children good from bad and that only moral people can achieve salvation.

The game was brought to England in the 1890s and it was altered to be a game of Victorian-era English morals. It's at that point the game was titled "Snakes and Ladders." In 1943, Milton Bradley merchandised the game in the United States as "Chutes and Ladders" and the snakes were changed to "chutes" or slides to make the game more kid-friendly. Just like in previous versions, doing a good deed allows you to climb up a ladder, but bad behavior will send you back.

You can buy several different versions of these games today. There are a couple companies who manufacture "Snakes and Ladders" including a 3D version by Spear's Games (UK). And while Hasbro purchased Milton Bradley in 1984, Hasbro still manufactures a very classic version of "Chutes and Ladders."
