so far as I am aware, a simple word is the word in it's basic form. or the root word.

for example "lock" is a basic word.

The complex word is the root word with either another stand alone word or with the attachment of a prefix or suffix.

For example lock + able = lockable

or un + lock = unlock

Complex and simple words is about word choice. Choosing more descriptive words would be using complex words. Using more complex words is cornerstone to having a sophisticated vocabulary. Complex words should be used and taught beginning with preschoolers.
