Not sure if you are asking for one sold in a retail setting or on the private market. If you are asking about a collectable I suspect one of the prototypes would have fetched the best price. I think I saw that one, which was never released to the market, was sold at auction for a lot of money but I can't remember the going price.

Edited....

If you are talking about the $72,000 pink Rear Loading Beach Bomb, yes, that is the most paid for Hot Wheels piece. It was a Pre-Production piece thought to be the only one made in Pink. It was bought at auction buy Collector Bruce Pascal in 2001.

This Rear Loading Beach Bomb is currently for sale at the asking price of $150,000.

Now the next piece in not a so-called production piece. It is more of a promotion piece than anything else.

"In 2008, Mattel wanted to prove just how big the Hot Wheels brand had become. So, they commissioned celebrity jeweler Jason Arasheben of Jason of Beverly Hills to create a one-of-a-kind Hot Wheels car to help them celebrate their 40th anniversary. It featured 2,702 multicolored diamonds, took more than 600 hours to produce, and was auctioned off for $140,000."

With that said, I would allow you to take your pick as to what the most expensive Hot Wheels ever made is.
