The only common English words that read the same backwards and upside down are the interjection OHO, the abbreviation SOS, the diminutive SIS and the word NOON. (Only OHO also appears the same in a mirror.)

They are palindromes (read the same forward and backward) and are made from the letters H, I, N, O, S, and Z which appear the same when inverted.

The word "MOM" does not qualify because upside down it reads "WOW". The proper name "SOHOS" would also be a palindromic and inverted version.
