Raggedy Ann and later Andy came out in the twenties. they were props for a series of juvenile books by a man named Johnny Gruelle, Having witnessed a violent crime while workling for a paper or magazine, Mr. Gruelle retreated into a pacifist fantasy world with his cartoon characters, which might have been called the lovable rejects. This plot idea had been done with pets, for example, but he was the first to apply it to human dolls, deliberately as opposed to improvised rag dolls, puppets etc. it is a sort of Dystopic down-turn and there were arguments against- in a fantasy world, whjy npot the best, the elite, the beautiful. Raggedy Ann and Andy figured in cartoon films also. the toys were made by Knickerbocker and were so copyrighted.see the Patch doll for a modern pseudo-revival.
