Even today we are still finding earlier examples. Most people credit Edison for inventing the phonograph but be only perfected it. "Victrola" was the brand name of the "Victor Talking Machine Company" phonograph. It only referred to Victor machines but they were the best quality and wildly popular so the name "Victrola" became a generic catch phrase for all phonographs.
