Pudsey Bear was designed by BBC graphics designer Joanna Ball, and her grandfather, Irvine Ball, had been Mayor of the Borough of Pudsey, a town in the West Riding of Yorkshire. She thus named the character Pudsey Bear in memory of her grandfather.
