In the mouth! Seriously! Even people who do not have teeth or dentures produce saliva which begins the digestive process of breaking down food. This is the reason why saving baby food that has been "double-dipped" with their spoon is discouraged- the saliva has begun the process and the food can spoil faster. If you know your baby generally does not eat a whole jar, spoon out the amount you anticipate they will eat into another container.

This is also why high starch foods raise our blood sugar so quickly: the saliva turns the starch into sugar while still in our mouth and is absorbed rapidly.
