Should one collect Space marines or Imperial Guard?
Answer It depends what you like. If you have read the background fluff about one or the other and liked it, or you find them more interesting in general pick them.I would say that Space marines are probably the best starter army as Imperial guard play style can get more complex.

man for man the space marines are stronger, they are augmented, generaly fielded with some form of power armor, and have many hundreds of years of combat experience, while an imperial guardsman is armored with light flak armor and issued only a lasgun. however the imperial guard gains strength through superior numbers, and massively powerfull and numerous armored vehicles. the imperial guardsmen in the universe outnumber the space marines several hundred thousand to one. however in one on one combat an individual space marine would almost certinly be more powerfull, on the other hand in battalion level combat the guard may be better prepared
Why do the Space Marines Turn on The Imperial Guard?
Space Marines and Guard don't turn on each other. Some Guard and Marines are declared heretics by the Inquisition. That means they no longer fight for the Emperor and are either renegades (which can still be called on in times of need) or have fallen to the Dark Gods of Chaos. You also must keep in mind that most Guardsmen have never seen a Space Marine (or an Asartes as they call them) they have heard of them, but if a Guardsman regiment that has heard rumors of the arch enemy being there with Chaos Space Marines and has never seen an Asartes before will fire on any thing that they think looks like a Heretic to them. If the Guard regiment fired on a loyal Space Marine strike force they would then be declared Hereticus and immediately killed.
Why can you only be two races in multiplayer in Dawn of War Dark Crusade?
You must have the previous games to play the other races. With the Original you get the Space Marines, Eldar, Chaos and the Orks. Winter Assault you get Imperial guard. With Soulstorm you get the Sisters of Battle and the Dark Eldar.

Yes, but you have to decide which of the two armies is considered your main army. This would become the "parent list." Then you'd be allowed to field troops legally from the other army, but you'll be limited to:1 HQ, 1 Elite, 2 Troops and 1 Fast Attack (Note: you can't use Heavy Support from another army)So for example say you made Daemon Hunters your "parent list" this would mean you'd be allowed to use all the usual unit slots for standard missions but could replace 1 HQ, 1 Elite, 2 Troop and 1 Fast attack slot with witch hunter units.There are other rules concerning this such as which side has to be the "parent list." For instance I know witch hunters cannot have space marines as allies, but the space marines can have the witch hunters as allies. In this alliance Space Marines HAVE to form the "parent list." Don't worry though... The rules actually don't consider Daemon Hunters to be Space Marines so you can decide which to make the "Parent list" of the other. Daemon Hunters are just that awesome. Period.All the imperial armies (Space Marines, witch hunters, daemon hunters, imperial guard) can ally with each other in this manner somehow, legally.
