Its an expression old people use for going, oh my god or sighing It comes from James Gordon Bennett Jr. He was always getting drunk and doing crazy things so the saying comes from him. It might mean ( Publicity Hound). James Gordon Bennett was an early twentieth century newspaper Magnate and indeed a publicity hound. he got his picture in the one modern segment of the four-panel ( history of the printed word) at the NYPL Mcgraw Rotunda in l9ll ( he was very much alive at the time. the Editor is visibly protrayed accurately- other characters- Pressman, copy boy, news vendor, are non-specific, but Mr. Bennett stands out- he was, as stated, still alive at the time, in l9ll this was considered bad manners.
