The word "would" came from the Germanic as wolde and the L was originally pronounced. However, over time the pronunciation changed. In the US in the 1800s, Noah Webster made one of the first US dictionaries, and kept the spelling despite the fact that most Americans already pronounced it the same as "wood." It may be that "could" (which came from coude) may have adopted the spelling from "would."
