The term "Teddy Boys" originated in the UK during the 1950s, referring to a youth subculture known for its distinctive fashion and rebellious attitude. The name is believed to be derived from the Edwardian style of clothing they adopted, which included long jackets and draped trousers, reminiscent of the early 20th century. The "teddy" aspect is thought to be a playful nod to "Edward," linking the style to the Edwardian era. This group was characterized by their love for rock and roll music and a defiance against post-war societal norms.
Because they were different. and not every one could be one. they were dressing up in a special way. "Teddy" is a nickname for Edward and the Teddy Boys wore clothing reminiscent of the Edwardian period of English History.
I am not sure that there is any specific name for the boys from Edinburgh. You may be thinking of the term Teddy Boys, but Teddy wasn't a reference to Edinburgh but to Edwardian, this was because of their Edwardian style of clothing.
Teddy Boys Don't Knit was created in 1981-04.
The name has nothing to do with Teddy Roosevelt! the Teddy Boys were a sort of generic term for juvenile delinquents. they affected the Edwardian or double-breasted jacket style- and this is said to inspire the name. they were a lawless bunch of punks- so to speak, and this is not an organized movement even akin to the Hippies which at least had the anti-war Peace motive. Not so with the Teds, as they were sometimes called. the Popular song ( Street-fighting man) which may have been banned in some cities ( like Chicago in l968 comes close to a ( TEDDY BOY) ideology. violence for its own sake, yecch!
