The reservations department or the central reservations system will either generate a letter of confirmation for the guest or provide the guest with a confirmation number. Usually some kind of deposit is required in order to book the room or at least a credit card number. Electronic folios can be formed and transactions can be made for guests prior to checking in as long as they have a confirmed reservation.
