You either need to check the trans fluid, smell the stick (this sounds weird) but if the trans oil smells burnt your trans could need replaced/ repaired. Another way of testing your trans is to take off the pan underneath your car. if you find metal shavings in the bottom of the pan then your trans is bad. It could also be something as simple as your trans needing more fluid. (I would suggest now tweaking with anything on or in your transmission unless you know what you are doing, it is very touchy and should only be rebuilt by professionals.
