The second highest point east of the Mississippi is Mount Craig in North Carolina at 6,647ft. There is some controversy due to the 4ft difference in the measurements of the two mountains. The elevation of Mount Craig was last verified in 1993 by satellite; however, Clingman's Dome (located on the NC-TN border) was last measured in 1920 using the conventional method. The designation dispute cannot truly be resolved until Clingman's Dome is remeasured.

Here are my suggestions--trying to give some that are scenic and not tourist traps: Ante-bellum Houses of Natchez Vicksburge Military National Park (I'm a history buff, but it does have some pretty scenery) Gulf Shores -- Light house at Bilouxi LIttle Mountain on the Natchez Trace Parkway --- Its either the highest or 2nd highest point in Miss. Elvis Presley's boyhood home is more a tourist site.
