Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, was the first European to reach New Zealand in 1642. He arrived on December 13, making landfall at what is now known as Golden Bay. During his visit, he encountered the Māori people, which led to a brief and hostile interaction. Tasman's expedition significantly contributed to European knowledge of the region, although it would be more than a century before further exploration and settlement occurred.
