I have them in my back yard in Yuma, Arizona. The larval stage appears every year between May and September. My back yard has lots of vegetation so it is a breeding ground for them. My immediate neighbors yards are filled with gravel and little else so they do not have them.
How they got there, I do not know, probably came in on a plant I purchased (I ended up with a snail infestation that way).
My doc informed that the reaction and blisters are classic examples of chigger feeding.
I have learned how to protect myself against them but I forget every year to take precautions until the first itching and blisters show up.
After September, the adults hibernate until the next breeding season.
no

It is definitely possible to get bitten by chiggers in Maryland. Chiggers are a type of tiny, red biting bug. By the time a person realizes they have been bitten, the chiggers have usually fallen off. The best way to treat a bite is with calamine lotion.

Yes, dogs can get chiggers. Chiggers are tiny mites that can latch onto a dog's skin, especially in areas with dense vegetation. They cause itching and irritation but are usually not a serious health concern for dogs. Regular grooming and checking for chiggers can help prevent infestations.
No, chlorine does not get rid of chiggers. Chiggers are tiny mites that are usually found in grassy areas. To get rid of chiggers, you can take a shower using soap and water, wash your clothes in hot water, and use anti-itch creams for any bites.
