In the small town of Minden, which lies between two hilly ranges approximately halfway between Toowoomba and Brisbane, there are two good picnic spots.
Coming from Toowoomba, turn left onto Minden-Lowood Road. Travel past the school and look out for a gravel road on your left. It goes up behind some houses, and takes you straight to the picnic spot. This one has plenty of trees, picnic tables, barbeque plates and toilets. Alternatively, a few metres past this gravel road, on the right hand side of Minden Lowood Rd is the Minden lagoon, where there are picnic tables but no toilets.
Another good picnic spot, but one which is only about twenty minutes from Toowoomba is just before Helidon, on the left. It is a large rest area on the bank of the creek, and has toilets and picnic tables, but is often quite busy with travellers.
If you are happy to travel some distance off the main road, turn in to Laidley. The access road is on the left just as you reach the town of Plainland. Follow the signs to take you over the highway into Laidley, about ten minutes down the road. Continue past the main town, and look for the sign indicating Lake Dyer, on your right. Follow that a kilometre or so out of town, and it takes you to Lake Dyer, or the Bill Gunn Dam, which is a great spot overlooking the dam. It is often busy, so if you prefer a quieter spot, travel right to the end of the road that goes through Laidley from the highway, turn left, and you will see a lagoon. You can picnic on the side of that, and there are also toilets there.
