There are SEVEN main land regions in the State of Texas: Panhandle Plains (Texas Panhandle) Big Bend Country (West Texas) Hill Country (Edward's Plateau, Central Texas) Prairies & Lakes Country (North Central to South Central Texas) Piney Woods (East Texas) South Texas Plains (Southwest Texas) Gulf Coast (Coastal Texas)
The 12 subregions of Texas are: Panhandle Plains, Prairies and Lakes, Gulf Coast, South Texas Plains, Hill Country, Big Bend Country, Piney Woods, Cross Timbers, South Texas Brush Country, Edwards Plateau, Trans-Pecos, and High Plains.
Generally East Texas refers to the eastern part of Texas, which is covered, or used to be covered, by what is called the Piney Woods. If you imagine a line drawn from Longview down through Huntsville, then eastward to Houston and on over to the Louisiana border, then all the territory in that area is known as East Texas. That is only generally-speaking, because the definition changes, depending on the person... I don't even consider Huntsville a part of East Texas, really, although Huntsville does. And definitely not Dallas. Another might say that everything east of Highway 59 is East Texas over to the Louisiana border, and some would include only northeast Texas, which we often refer to as Deep East Texas - Nacogdoches, Center, Marshall, etc. Depends on your viewpoint - I don't think there's any official pronouncement on the definition of East Texas. Why don't you Google it?
It is my understanding that red wolves (canis rufus) are the only true wolf that is left in the southern United States, with a lone pack residing in the Piney Woods of southern East Texas. The coyote (canis latrans) is often mistaken for the wolf, especially in the Southern states.
Two geographic subsections in the coastal plains region are the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Gulf Coastal Plain. The Atlantic Coastal Plain stretches along the East Coast from New York to Florida, while the Gulf Coastal Plain borders the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Texas.
Some physical features of Texas include the Gulf Coast, the Great Plains, the Hill Country, deserts in the west, piney woods in the east, and the Rio Grande River that serves as a natural border with Mexico. Texas also has diverse ecosystems, including canyons, mountains, and prairies.
