The city of Mackay itself is on a flat, coastal plain, which is mostly developed with sugar cane crops, like much of the Queensland coast.

About 15 to 30 kilometres inland in any eastern direction there is a hinterland with a variety of state and national parks, featuring a number of peaks.

Of note is Eungella National Park, popular as a place to view the shy and elusive marsupial, the platypus. However, they are more likely to be found in a stream or river at the bottom of a mountain.
