In Florida, having a misdemeanor does not automatically disqualify someone from becoming a mental health counselor. However, applicants must disclose any criminal history during the licensure process, and the Florida Department of Health will evaluate the nature of the offense, its relevance to the profession, and any evidence of rehabilitation. Each case is considered individually, so it is advisable to consult with the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling for specific guidance.
Becoming a counselor now...have NOT come across this as a problem. Where you might want to look into is the licensing - LLPC etc. that can depend on the state too.
