You can live and work temporarily in Antarctica when you apply to your government for an opportunity. Either you can work as a scientist answering a question about the health of planet earth, and gathering your research there, or you can work in support of science.

In order to qualify for a post, you must be able to complete the tasks of the job, and pass rigorous mental, physical and dental health physicals. Your time 'on the ice' can be up to 12 months before you are required to take 'R&R' in order to allow your body to recover from extreme cold weather conditions. There are also six-month opportunities.

Some military personnel do operate logistics for some research stations, but most of the temporary population is civilian.
